Baker Sterchi Secures Defense Verdict for Hospital Client

Following an eight-day jury trial in St. Louis County, Baker Sterchi successfully obtained a defense verdict for a hospital client in a wrongful death case. Plaintiffs alleged an emergency medicine physician and several hospital employees were negligent in intubating the decedent in the emergency department, causing an anoxic brain injury that necessitated a tracheostomy and ultimately resulted in her death nearly a year later from complications. The defense countered the decedent experienced an eclamptic seizure and flash pulmonary edema which was appropriately treated by the providers. At trial, Plaintiff sought $3 million dollars in damages for economic losses related to the death and the care of decedent’s three young children.
